Facebook has said sorry for the bad memories its new "Year in Review" feature upset the people who lost their close family members, friends and homes in year 2014.
The “Year in Review” post automatically brings to the front of our timeline’s series of images and posts from 2014, just to display how brilliant a twelve-month period it's been but makes no sense for those unhappy posts that bring back the most painful and troubling memories possible.
The “Year in Review” feature combined with a tag line saying, "it has been a great year" brought grief to a web designer expert, writer Eric Meyer who wrote in a blog post and complaining about his “Year in Review” post "inadvertent algorithmic cruelty" as it forced him to relive the pain of his young daughter's tragic death.
Meyer wrote, “I didn’t go looking for grief this afternoon, but it found me anyway.” Sadly, Meyer’s daughter died from brain cancer this year and in seeing her picture appear in his “Year in Review” post, he was forcefully reminded of what he had lost. He continued that, “Algorithms are essentially thoughtless,” but the “human aspect” of Facebook’s decision “fell short.” In writing a post about his “worst-case scenario,” he hopes to increase awareness of “empathetic design.”
"But for those of us who lived through the death of loved ones, or spent extended time in the hospital, or were hit by divorce or losing a job or any one of a hundred crises, we might not want another look at this past year,” Meyer wrote after viewing the picture of his daughter, who died of brain cancer earlier this year, in his news feed.
Facebook admitted that it might not have been the best idea after all, after a flurry of complaints flew in from parties unable that their year had been one to celebrate.
"The app was awesome for a lot of people, but clearly in this case we brought him grief rather than joy," said product manager for Facebook, Jonathan Gheller.
"We can do better — I'm very grateful he took the time in his grief to write the blog post," he added.
Now, it looks Facebook has again found itself in suffering with users over its “Year in Review” posts. Without prior warning, they began appearing in users’ News Feeds, highlighting their most popular images from 2014. Users could then choose to share the ‘news reel’ with family and friends with the tagline, “It’s been a great year! Thanks for being a part of it.”
The Facebook members who haven’t shared yet their “Year in Review”, just look at the Facebook’s “Year in Review” before you publish on your timeline. And I know by doing this the person who felt some sorrow moments in 2014 cant be able to celebrate their New Year by using this Facebook’s app “Year in Review”. Facebook members have also lashed out at the overly prominent nature of the feature, which is extremely difficult to ignore with its constant promotion and reminders. Now I must say Facebook have to review its app and then they have to provide a revised “Year in Review”.
